Sheldon Tetreault

Director: Governance Advisory Services

Sheldon was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario.  His extended family (Métis/Francophone) are all in southern Manitoba.  Sheldon completed his undergraduate degree from Trent University in Comparative Development Studies. In his third year he studied in Ecuador, South America and had the privilege to live and work with Indigenous people of Imbabura. After Trent, Mr. Tetreault worked for the Kluane First Nation in the Yukon as it negotiated a comprehensive claim under the Umbrella Final Agreement. He also worked for the Teslin Tlingit Council as they implemented self-government on the basis of a traditional clan system of government. Sheldon continued to develop his professional qualifications by completing a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Victoria. While there he focused on First Nations governments and completed his thesis project on organizational design for self-government implementation. Sheldon has worked in British Columbia and has had involvement in provincial Aboriginal youth programs, the BC Treaty Process, and the Healthy Communities movement. He spent the last four years as the Senior Administrator for the Lil’wat Nation. In that capacity he represented the Four Host First Nations at the opening of BC/Canada Place in Torino, Italy for the 2006 Winter Olympics. In 2005 Sheldon was selected as an emerging leader in BC to attend the Aspen Institute Executive Seminar (in Aspen Colorado). On a personal note, Sheldon has a beautiful young family and is thankful for their support and inspiration. Sheldon looks forward to contributing to the success of the National Centre for First Nations Governance as it works with communities across the country moving toward self-governance.
