What will you learn? You will learn what is takes to organize a legal and political strategy that can maximize your opportunities when negotiating with industry and in your relations with government.
Leaders and managers have the opportunity to learn from some of the country’s leaders in territorial rights. The objectives of this forum are to create an understanding about:
> The legal obligations of the crown regarding crown activity on First Nation territories regarding consultation and accommodation.
> The obligations of First Nations regarding consultation and accommodation
> Developing an organizational strategy in terms of your governance so that you can effectively and efficiently engage the Crown, to achieve reconciliation and certainty on your territories.
This forum will provide Ontario Nations affected by Ring of Fire mining with a roadmap for organizing and will give any First Nation a concrete look at strategies to protect territorial rights.
Critical to this forum is the facilitated dialogue taking place after speaker presentations. First Nations leaders and administrators will have an opportunity to discuss the presentations, pose their own questions and learn from each other in small group dialogue sessions.
A First Nations Strategy for the Ring of Fire is the first of a series of forums NCFNG is hosting on Governing Beyond the Indian Act.

The Bad News about our National Conference
We had planned to hold our first national conference about Governing Beyond the Indian Act in Toronto, Ontario in May, 2012. However, without notice, our primary funder, DAAND, informed us that we are the recipients of a 25% funding cut. This is second major DAAND cut in 13 months and will impact many of the great projects and services that we have been providing to First Nations. One of these impacted projects is our national conference on Governing Beyond the Indian Act.
